3 Hair Removal Methods and Their Pros and Cons
There are plenty of ways to start your journey to becoming hairless. Getting rid of excess, unwanted hair is an exciting life mission for some and an overwhelming task for others. There are people who are passionate about discovering new ways to get smooth, hair-free skin and there are those, too, who simply want to know which way is best for them so they can try it and stick to it if they like it. Whether you’re one or the other, I’m sure you’re curious about the pros and cons of the different hair removal methods known to man so let’s talk about that.
- Waxing - whether you get your waxing done at home or at the salon, there’s no denying that this is one of the most popular methods of hair removal. Waxing can be done hot or cold, it all just boils down to your preference.
Pros:
- Effectively removes hair with effects lasting up to three weeks
- Reduces hair growth over time
- Accessible for everyone
- Lessens your chances of getting ingrown hair
Cons:
- Painful, though the pain becomes more tolerable over time
- It can be awkward exposing your hairy parts to a stranger (if you’re getting it done at a salon)
- Shaving - shaving has got to be everybody’s intro to hair removal. It’s the first method most people learned to do and also one of the most popular hair removal methods out there.
Pros:
- Cheap, quick, and easy once you’ve learned how to do it
- Can be done on the face, the body, and even on sensitive areas like the bikini line (using different razors, of course!)
- Painless
Cons:
- Hair grows back quickly and you’d need to shave more frequently
- You get an itchy feeling once your hair starts to grow
- Increases risk of getting ingrown hair
- Depilatory Creams - also called hair removal creams, depilatory creams work by weakening the keratin found in hair so they’re dissolved and easily wiped away. There are depilatories for body hair and facial hair removal so make sure you’re using the right one for the intended purpose.
Pros:
- Quick and painless. Depilatory creams work in as fast as 5 to 10 minutes so they’re perfect for busy people.
- Cheap - depilatories cost anywhere from $5 to $15 a tube and each tube can be used multiple times as you only need a sufficient amount every time you do it.
- Leaves no room for ingrown hair growth because of the way the cream works.
- Anyone who can read and follow instructions can use depilatory creams with no problem. There is no learning curve to overcome, nor any special skill needed to get the best possible result.
Cons:
- Possible allergic reaction to chemical/s found in depilatory creams. Make sure to do a skin test or a patch test prior to using one.
- Hair grows back quickly. You’d need several treatments/sessions before hair regrowth starts to slow down.
There are plenty of other hair removal methods but we’ll talk about those in another post. Before choosing which hair removal method to stick to, make sure you read these pros and cons to arrive at the best decision so you can be on your way to smooth, hair-free skin.
