3 Things You Need To Know Before Getting a Hair Dryer

by Anjelina Tongco

Whether you’re buying your very first one, or you’re getting your third, purchasing a hair dryer is something that you should put a lot of time and thought into.

There are tons of hair dryers out on the market -- from the most basic one to ones that are so techy and smart, you’d be confused using it for the first time. With all these choices, it’s understandable that you feel overwhelmed and unsure of what to pick. That’s why, in this post, we’ll be sharing with you 5 things you need to know before getting a hair dryer.

  • Higher wattage means stronger power

  • If you’re wondering why the hair dryer at the salon works better than most of the ones you’ve tried from your friends’ homes or even your mom’s, you should know that it’s all about the power. A professional hair dryer often has higher wattage than ones that are meant for home use. However, that doesn’t mean you can get one for yourself to use at home.

Most hair dryers for everyday at-home use are rated at 800 to 1800 watts. If you want to get stronger power, anywhere from 1800 watts (for short or thin hair) to 3600 watts (for long, textured, or thick hair) would be great.

  • More settings = better bang for your buck

  • Forget about hair dryers that only go on and off. The best hair dryer to get is the one that has multiple heat settings. Being able to control the heat that comes out of your hair blower means you can protect your hair from too much heat. Ladies with thinner hair don’t need the full 3000 watts blowing through their hair as it can make the hair too dry.

Look for a dryer that has multiple heat settings. If you see one that has a “cool shot” button, get that! The cool shot button is a feature that helps your hair set in place better and longer.

    1. You need those attachments

Some people wonder go through life not knowing what those hair dryer attachments are for. They think it’s a gimmick and that companies and brands only include these so you feel like you’re getting more for the money you spend. In reality, though, these attachments are very useful and important, especially if you have textured hair.

If you have curly hair, you’re going to want to get a hair dryer that comes with the blow dryer diffuser attachment. This is going to make the drying process faster and easier for you. There’s also the concentrator nozzle which is used to achieve that “blow out” look. There are tons of other attachments and accessories that come with hair dryers so don’t skip and get the cheaper hair dryer that doesn’t come with attachments.
