Are Salon Shampoos Better Than Supermarket Shampoos?

by Anjelina Tongco

One of the best things about going to a salon appointment is getting your hair washed. It’s just so relaxing to have your scalp gently scrubbed and massaged and your hair washed, isn’t it? If you’re anything like most of us, you may have noticed how salon shampoos give you a softer and cleaner feel and wondered what they use.

Is it one of those shampoos you’ve turned your nose up at from the supermarket or a private label brand from the salon? Perhaps it’s a well-known brand that you haven’t heard of yet because it is imported. Quick question, what’s a country that’s known for good hair?

Before you lose your marbles over this silly question, allow us to clear one thing up for you. Yes, there are salon shampoos (aka professional shampoos) and there are supermarket shampoos (aka the ones you see and buy from the stores). And, yes, both are different from each other. Want to learn more? Read on.

Supermarket Shampoos: Affordability and Convenience

Supermarket shampoos are the familiar faces of the hair care aisle.  They offer a variety of formulations for different hair types and concerns, all at budget-friendly prices. These shampoos typically contain:

  • Sulfates: These cleansing agents create a rich lather, but can sometimes be harsh and stripping on the scalp. Don’t worry, there are sulfate-free drugstore shampoos, too. You just have to be mindful about reading the labels.

  • Silicones: Silicones can coat the hair, providing temporary smoothness and shine, but can also build up over time.

  • Fragrances and Dyes: These add scent and color, but can irritate sensitive scalps.

Salon Shampoos: A Targeted Approach

Salon shampoos are formulated with higher-quality ingredients and cater to specific hair needs. You may not see them in supermarkets, but you’ll likely find them easily in beauty supply stores or online. They may contain:

  • Gentler Cleansers: These cleanse effectively without being overly stripping.

  • Nourishing Ingredients: Think botanical extracts, vitamins, and oils that target concerns like dryness, frizz, or color protection.

  • More Concentrated Formulas: A smaller amount of salon shampoo is often needed compared to drugstore brands.

The Great Shampoo Showdown: It Depends

So, which one reigns supreme? The truth is, there's no single answer. Here's a breakdown to help you decide:

Budget: Supermarket shampoos are the clear winner on price. They’re more affordable than salon shampoos and they come in smaller sizes, too, if you’re traveling or simply in a pinch.

Hair Needs: For basic cleansing or if you have unproblematic hair, a supermarket shampoo might be sufficient. However, if you have specific concerns like dandruff, color-treated hair, or scalp sensitivity, a salon shampoo can offer more targeted benefits. You might find that salon shampoos also come with a more complete line of products like hair oils, serums, and the like that help target the same hair concerns compared to drugstore brands that usually only come with conditioner.

Ingredients: Salon shampoos often contain higher-quality, more concentrated ingredients that may be more effective. However, some people with sensitive scalps might react better to the simpler formulas of drugstore options.

The perfect shampoo is all about finding what works best for your hair.  Consider your budget, hair type, and desired results when making your choice. Remember, a healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair, so prioritize gentle cleansing and nourishing ingredients.  With a little exploration, you'll find the shampoo that leaves your hair feeling clean, healthy, and oh-so-fabulous!
