How To Protect Your Hair While You Sleep

by Anjelina Tongco

You know you’ve had a good night’s sleep when you wake up with messy hair: tangles, knots, and all. You look at yourself in the mirror and you see a refreshed version of yourself and the epitome of the term “bedhead.”

As good as it sounds, waking up with bedhead isn’t all fun and games. Too much tossing and turning in your bed while you sleep can damage your hair and result in shedding or hair loss. This is why it’s important to protect your hair while you sleep. Here are some tips on how to do that.

  1. Keep hair moisturized - well-moisturized locks are less prone to breakage which is a common thing that happens to hair during sleep. Make sure you’re using a good hair conditioner to protect your hair from damage and to keep it healthy as well.
  2. Brush your hair before bed - no, you don’t need to brush your hair 100 times before bed, but brushing it until it’s silky smooth before you hit the sack can help prevent damage to your while you sleep. Brush your hair enough times to just get rid of the knots and tangles so it doesn’t get worse in your sleep.
  3. Look into protective hairstyles for sleeping - yes, there are hairstyles that can help keep your hair in good condition while you sleep. Whether you have straight, wavy, or curly hair, these hairstyles will not only keep your hair safe from damage but will ensure you have amazing hair when you wake up, too. You might also want to use a leave-in conditioner in your night time hair routine for better protection and damage control as well.
  4. Use silk sheets and pillowcases - silk sheets and pillowcases are not just for aesthetics, you know. They’re quite beneficial for your skin and hair as well. Regular cotton (and other types of fabric) pillowcases are too rough for your hair to rub against. Sleeping on silk pillowcases allows your hair to glide on the fabric with little to no friction at night so toss and turn all you want!

Who knew sleeping could cause damage to the hair? Thankfully, these tips can help you prevent the damage so you can wake up refreshed, rejuvenated, and glamorous!
