Pro Tips for Fresh and Clean Hair

by Anjelina Tongco

Greasy hair can turn a good hair day into a bad one in a hurry. That weighed-down feeling can leave you feeling self-conscious and frustrated. It may seem like a natural part of life -- like there’s no other choice but to accept it on days that it happens to you and be grateful to the gods on days when it doesn’t -- but it really doesn’t have to be. You can avoid getting greasy hair, you know. Let’s talk more about that.

What Makes Hair Greasy?

Our scalps naturally produce sebum, an oily substance that helps keep hair hydrated and protected. However, overproduction of sebum, combined with environmental factors and hair care habits, can lead to that dreaded greasy look. Here are some causes:

  • Hormonal Fluctuations: Changes in hormones, like those experienced during puberty, pregnancy, or menstruation, can trigger increased sebum production.

  • Stress: Feeling stressed? Your scalp might be too! Stress can disrupt your body's natural processes, including sebum production.

  • Diet: A diet high in processed foods and unhealthy fats can contribute to greasy hair.

  • Improper Hair Care: Using harsh shampoos, over-washing, or applying conditioner to the roots can all disrupt the scalp's natural balance and lead to greasiness.

How to Avoid Greasy Hair?

The good news is that with a few adjustments to your hair care routine, you can minimize greasiness and achieve healthy, balanced locks. Here's what you can do:

1. Use the Right Products:

Shampoo: Opt for a gentle, clarifying shampoo formulated for oily hair. These shampoos will remove excess oil without stripping your hair of its natural moisture.

Conditioner: Focus on applying conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends of your hair, avoiding the roots where oil tends to accumulate. Consider lightweight, silicone-free conditioners specifically designed for oily hair.

2. Wash Your Hair Less Frequently:

This might sound counterintuitive, but over-washing can actually worsen greasiness. Washing too often strips your scalp of its natural oils, triggering it to produce even more sebum to compensate. Aim to wash your hair every other day or even every two to three days, depending on your needs.

3. Double Cleanse (Sometimes):

If you find your hair gets greasy quickly after a workout or on particularly hot days, consider a double cleanse. Wash your hair twice: once with your clarifying shampoo to get rid of the extra grease and buildup then with a mild shampoo to bring back moisture during the second wash. This will remove sweat, product buildup, and excess oil without over-stripping your hair.

4. Don't Touch Your Hair:

Our hands come into contact with oil throughout the day. Frequently touching your hair transfers that oil to your scalp, contributing to greasiness. Try to keep your hands out of your hair as much as possible, and consider wearing headbands or updos to minimize contact.

5. Use Less Conditioner:

While conditioner is essential for healthy hair, using too much can weigh down your hair and make it appear greasy. Start with a small amount of conditioner, focusing on the ends only. You can always add a little more if your hair feels dry.

Remember, consistency is key! By implementing these pro tips into your regular hair care routine, you can effectively manage greasy hair and achieve healthy, balanced locks that leave you feeling confident and beautiful.
