What Is Scalp Care? (And How Do You Build A Good Scalp Care Routine)

by Anjelina Tongco

Often times, we read about just how important it is to care for your hair if you want it to look good and stay healthy. There are tons of tips, hacks, and product recommendations out there that can help you build the ultimate hair routine so that you can achieve your hair goal, whatever it is.

What we don’t see enough of, though, are articles and information about scalp care. What is scalp care? Is it really necessary? What do you need for a basic scalp care routine to do at home? These are just some questions that we used to ask when we first heard about scalp care. Lucky for you, you don’t have to stay as clueless as we were. Here’s what you need to know about scalp care and why you need to start your own scalp care routine.

What Is Scalp Care And Why Is It So Important?

Scalp care is simply care of the scalp. The reason that it’s so important is because an unhealthy scalp can make all your efforts into building a good hair care routine go to waste. To get truly healthy, beautiful hair, you need to have a healthy scalp first. Unfortunately, there are tons factors that can contribute to the poor health of your scalp. These include pollution, the sun, sweat, and even the products you use on your hair every day like hairspray, gel, leave-in conditioner, and the like. A good scalp care routine can also help regrow hair if you’ve been suffering from hair fall and hair loss.

Without a proper scalp care routine in place, you could suffer from dandruff, hair fall, greasy hair, and other problems.

How To Build A Good, Basic, Scalp Care Routine

Anyone who wants to achieve beautiful, healthy hair should also invest in good scalp care products (on top of the hair care products you already have). Lucky for you, creating one that will help you meet your healthy scalp and hair goal is easy. Here’s how.

  1. Identify your scalp type -is your scalp oily, dry, normal? Is there a specific ingredient that your scalp could be allergic to? Identifying your scalp type and getting to know more about it is the first and most important step to building a good and effective scalp care routine.
  2. Cleanse and exfoliate- aside from washing your hair daily with your preferred shampoo and conditioner of choice, you need to start using a clarifying shampoo as well. This will help get rid of the product and dirt build up from your scalp. Without the buildup, your hair (and scalp) will feel fresher and lighter as well. While you’re at it, you might as well exfoliate as well by using those in-shower scalp brushes or by simply exerting a bit more effort into rubbing around your scalp while you shampoo.
  3. Moisturize - there are plenty of ways to moisturize your scalp. If you’re busy or on a budget, you can opt to simply use serums or oils to moisturize your scalp. If you’re lucky enough to have a bigger budget or you simply want to pamper your scalp a bit more, you can opt to get a scalp treatment done instead. Even moisturizing hair treatments like keratin treatment and moroccan oil treatment benefits the scalp and moisturizes it as well.
  4. Maintain and protect - the last step is to maintain good scalp health and protect it from harmful factors. You can do this by taking it easy on the new products you apply to your hair (and scalp), wearing a hat or using an umbrella when heading out, and more.
